Radio City - Key Dates

1964

** September 1964

Reg Calvert acquired Screaming Lord Sutch’s interest in Radio Sutch, with plans to re-launch the station as Radio City

** September 1964

Test broadcasts on various frequencies in preparation for launch of Radio City

30th September 1964

Radio City starts regular programmes

** December 1964

A more powerful  transmitter was acquired by Radio City and music broadcasts were switched to 1034kHz (290m) (announced as 299m), while the original transmitter was used to air the sponsored religious programmes on a separate frequency of 1605kHz (188m)

1965

** ****1965

Equipment landed on Knock John Fort by Radio City staff who proposed to a second station but another potential offshore radio operator, Roy Bates, already had his sights set on the Knock John Fort and territorial dispute broke out between the two rival groups

** April 1965

Plans announced, and abandoned, to launch Radio City (West) and City TV

** June 1965

A new aerial mast installed on Shivering Sands Tower and Radio City’s broadcasting hours extended

** September 1965

Radio City negotiating with ship-based rival Radio Caroline South (Project Atlanta) about a possible merger. Project Atlanta agree to deliver a more powerful transmitter to Shivering Sands

1st October 1965

Radio City and Radio Caroline South’s sales teams merge and Radio City starts relaying Caroline’s news service







21st September 1964

Malta became an independent member of the British Commonwealth.

10th December 1964

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize during ceremonies in Oslo, Norway.






6th April 1965  

The United States launched Intelsat I, also known as "Early Bird", communications satellite.

6th September 1965 India and Pakistan began a second war over Kashmir.

4th October 1965 Pope Paul VI became the first reigning pontiff to visit the Western Hemisphere when he addressed the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
