Radio 270 - Key Dates

** late 1965

The idea for a 'local' offshore radio station to serve Yorkshire discussed by local businessmen

1965

26th February 1966

Oceaan VII arrived in Scarborough, and within hours conversion to a radio ship began

1st April 1966

Target launch date for Radio 270 missed because of storms delaying the crew reaching the radio ship and later damage to the Ocean VII resulting in a 100’ (30.5m) section of the aerial mast being lost overboard

4th June 1966

Test transmissions begin for Radio 270

9th June 1966

Regular programmes start  

27th July 1966

The Bill to outlaw offshore broadcasting stations - the Marine etc. Broadcasting (Offences) Bill was introduced into the House of Commons and received its formal First Reading.

** October 1966

‘Bomb’ hoax against Oceaan VII

1st May 1967

First party political broadcast on Radio 270

14th July 1967

The Marine etc. Broadcasting (Offences) Act received the Royal Assent and Postmaster General Edward Short announced that its provisions would come into effect on 15th August 1967

14th August 1967

Radio 270 closed at 11.59pm

11th November 1965  

Britain declared that it will not grant independence for its colony of Southern Rhodesia until majority rule is created there.





31st March 1966 Labour Party won British parliamentary General Election.

2nd June 1966  

The U.S. space probe Surveyor 1 landed on the moon and began transmitting detailed photographs of the lunar surface.

30th July 1966

US planes bombed the demilitarised zone in Vietnam.





28th April 1966 Boxing champion Muhammad Ali refused induction into the Army and is stripped of his boxing title
